A huge structure called the Great Seto Bridge connects Okayama to Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku island. Much of the land is very green. In fact, 11% of the land is part of protected natural parks. These include the Daisen-Oki and Setonaikai National Parks.

History tells us that Okayama has changed over many years. Before the year 1868, the land was split into three different areas. These were known as Bizen, Bitchū, and Mimasaka provinces. In 1871, the prefecture was created during a time of big changes in Japan. This time was called the Meiji period. The borders we see today were finally set in 1876.

There are fifteen cities found within the prefecture.
