This region is near the islands of Kyūshū and Shikoku. It is also near the Kansai area. The land here is not flat. Instead, it has many irregular rolling hills. Mountains run through the middle from east to west. These mountains split the region into two distinct parts.

Because of the mountains, the region has two sides. The north side is called San'in. This part faces the Sea of Japan. It is a place with an agricultural economy. This means people do a lot of farming there. The south side is called San'yō. This part faces the Seto Inland Sea. San'yō is a place with a lot of heavy industry. This means there are many large factories there. These two names come from a system called yin and yang.

People have many ideas about the name Chūgoku. The name literally means "middle country." In the past, Japan was divided into provinces called koku. These provinces were grouped by how far they were from the capital. Some think Chūgoku was a name for middle countries to the west. Others think it meant the provinces between Kansai and Kyūshū. Kyūshū was a very important link to mainland Asia. Today, the name is also used for China. To avoid confusion, some people call the region the San'in-San'yō region.
