The land has many rolling hills. Mountains run through the middle. These mountains split the region into two parts. The north part is called San'in. It faces the Sea of Japan. The south part is called San'yo. It faces the Seto Inland Sea.

San'in has many farms. San'yo has many big factories. Hiroshima is a very large city. It has over one million people. It was rebuilt after a war. Okayama is another large city.

There are five prefectures in Chugoku. They are Hiroshima, Okayama, Shimane, Tottori, and Yamaguchi. In the year 2020, about 7.3 million people lived there. Many people live in the big cities. Other parts of the region are quiet and rural. There are also many airports for travel.
