Kansai has a very long and deep history. It is often called the historical heart of Japan. Long ago, Nara was the site of Japan's first permanent capital. Later, the capital moved to Heian-kyō, which we now call Kyoto. This city stayed the capital for over a thousand years.

Life in Kansai feels different from life in the Kantō region. People in the east, near Tokyo, are often seen as more formal. However, people in Kansai are known for having a strong sense of humor. They are often described as being down-to-earth and practical. The people even have their own way of speaking called Kansai-ben. This includes different words and ways of pronouncing things. Sports are also a big part of the local feeling. Many people enjoy watching professional baseball or soccer teams in the region.
