Most people think of Kantō as the area east of the Hakone Barrier. This region is the heart of Japan's politics and economy. This is because it contains Tokyo, the capital city. It is a place where many important things happen for the whole nation.

The land in Kantō is a mix of flat areas and high places. The Kantō Plain is the largest plain in all of Japan.

It covers more than 45 percent of the land in the region. Around this plain, you will find many hills and mountains. The highest point is the summit of Mt. Nikko-Shirane.

This mountain sits on the border of Tochigi and Gunma. Different types of forests grow here at different heights. You might see evergreen forests or trees like beech and birch.

History has shaped Kantō into what it is today. Long ago, a place called Kamakura was a very important political capital. It was the seat of Japan's first military government from 1185 to 1333.

Later, in 1591, a leader named Tokugawa Ieyasu moved his soldiers to this region. He chose a small town called Edo as his new seat of power.

Over time, Edo grew into the massive, modern city we know as Tokyo today.

Many people live in this busy region. In 2010, the population was 42,607,376 people. This is about one third of all the people living in Japan.

The region includes seven main prefectures: Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Saitama, Tochigi, and Tokyo. Most of the land is used for cities, shops, and factories. However, some people still farm the land. They grow rice as a main crop and vegetables for the big cities.

Life in Kantō is connected to the natural world and its changes. The weather is warm and wet, with a lot of rain in summer and fall. The region also has to deal with nature's power. A very big earthquake happened here in 1923. It caused a lot of damage in the Tokyo area. Because of this, people now work hard to make sure buildings are safe. They use special ways to prepare for earthquakes to keep everyone protected.
