It is a huge group of cities and towns in Japan. Most of this area sits within the Kantō region. This includes Tokyo Metropolis and the prefectures of Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Tochigi. The area also reaches into the neighboring Chūbu region to include Yamanashi. Because it is so large, people use different names to describe it.

It is a massive center for people and business.

This area is incredibly crowded with people. The United Nations estimates that about 36,954,512 people live here as of 2026.

This makes it the third most populous metropolitan area in the world. It is also a giant center for money and trade. With a GDP of around US$1.8 trillion, it is the second-largest economy in the world. Only the New York City metropolitan area has a larger economy.

The area is also the second-largest in terms of built-up landmass.

Defining the exact borders of the area can be a hard job. Some people use laws made by the government to set the limits. Others look at how people travel to work every day. For example, some definitions include everyone who commutes to the 23 special wards of Tokyo.

Other definitions look at how close people live to the center. Some rules look at how many people live within 50 or 70 kilometers of the government buildings in Shinjuku. Because of these different ways of measuring, the population numbers can change depending on the definition used.

The landscape is mostly flat with some low hills. Many cities merge together to form one continuous urban area. You can see how the cities grow along railway lines and train stations.

Major cities like Yokohama, Chiba, Saitama, and Hachiōji sit within this loop. The coastline of Tokyo Bay is filled with busy industrial zones. Two big areas are the Keihin Industrial Area and the Keiyō Industrial Zone. Rivers like the Arakawa and the Tama flow through the land. To the west, the land becomes more mountainous.

Life in the area is very busy and connected. Many people live in suburban housing developments like the Tama New Town.
