The Kantō Plain is a very large area in central Japan.

It is the biggest plain in the whole country. This land sits on the island of Honshu. It covers many different places like Tokyo and Saitama. It also includes Kanagawa, Chiba, Gunma, Tochigi, and Ibaraki.

Mountains sit all around the edges of this plain. Many rivers start in those mountains. Most of them flow east or southeast. They eventually reach the Pacific Ocean or Tokyo Bay.

Many rivers help shape the land here. The Tone River is the largest one in Japan. It covers a huge area of land called a floodplain.

Other important rivers include the Watarase and the Naka. In the south, you can find the Arakawa and Tama rivers. These rivers carry sediment to create the lowland areas. Much of the plain is made of flat plateaus. These include the Musashino and the Shimōsa plateaus. The Musashino Plateau is the largest stretch of land. It goes from Ōme to the edge of Yamanote.

This land was formed by a long movement of the Earth. This movement began a very long time ago. It caused mountains to rise up around the edges. It also caused sediment to settle in the middle. This created a shape called a basin. A basin is low in the center and high on the sides. The center of the plain is actually sinking slowly today. This happens because of a thing called tectonic extension. This process has been happening for a very long time. The land looks much like it did 3,000 years ago.

Nature has also shaped the soil on the plateaus. The ground is covered in a thick layer of loam. This loam came from old volcanic ash. Ash from Mount Fuji and Mount Hakone traveled here. Ash from Mount Asama and Mount Akagi also landed here. These volcanoes are located to the north and southwest. This volcanic soil makes the plateaus very special. Some hills like the Sayama Hills also rise above the plateaus. These hills are usually between 100 and 200 meters high.

The weather in the Kantō Plain changes with the seasons. Summers are often hot and very rainy. Typhoons sometimes come through during the summer months.

Winters can be quite cold. In the south, the air stays mild because of a warm ocean current. In the north, the sun shines for many hours. In winter, strong dry winds can blow through the plain. These are called the Akagi Orosi or the Tsukuba Orosi. Even when it is sunny, the air can feel very cold. This is because of the dry north winds.
