Long ago, it was part of Musashi Province. In the year 708, people found copper in the Chichibu District. The area was a fertile place for farming. It grew much of the food for the Kantō region. During the Edo period, many local rulers held land here. Some parts were part of the shogunate lands. These lands were near the city of Edo.

Saitama has changed many times since the 1800s.

Many small prefectures like Urawa and Kawagoe joined together. In 1871, the government began setting up new rules. The first city in the area was Kawagoe in 1922. Later, many towns and villages merged into larger cities. In 2001, three cities merged to make Saitama City. This is now the capital and the largest city. It has over 1.3 million people living there.

Today, Saitama is a busy place to live.

Other large cities include Kawaguchi and Tokorozawa. The population has grown very fast since 1960. This happened because Tokyo grew so much larger.
