Aichi is a very busy place for making things. It is a major center for the automotive industry. The Toyota Motor Corporation is based here.

Many other companies make parts for planes and cars. This includes making steel and ceramics too. The area has a very strong economy. Between 2005 and 2006, it was the fastest growing prefecture in Japan. Its population grew by 7.4 percent during that time. This growth was even faster than in Tokyo.

The history of the area involves two old provinces. These were called Owari and Mikawa. Later, these two areas were joined together. In 1871, the region was split into two different prefectures. One was called Nagoya Prefecture. The other was called Nukata Prefecture. Nagoya Prefecture was later renamed Aichi Prefecture in 1872. Then, it joined with Nukata Prefecture to become what it is today. The name Aichi might come from an old word, Ayuchi.
