The land around Nagoya is shaped by many rivers. The Kiso River flows along the western border of the city. The Shōnai River comes from the northeast and turns toward the bay. In 1610, people built the Hori River as a man-made canal. This canal helps the rivers move water and goods through the area. The city was built on low plateaus to stay safe from floods.
