It sits on the large island of Honshu in the Chūbu region. Gifu is one of only eight landlocked prefectures in the country. This means it has no borders along the ocean. Instead, it shares borders with seven other prefectures. These neighbors include Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui, Shiga, Mie, Aichi, and Nagano.

The area has a population of about 2,040,000 people. Most people live in the southern part near the Nōbi Plain. This region is a vast area of flat, fertile land. The northern Hida region is very different with its tall mountains. These mountains are part of the Japanese Alps.

The land in Gifu changes quite a bit from north to south. In the north, the Hida region is dominated by high peaks. These include the Hida Mountains and the Ryōhaku Mountains. This area is much cooler and sees very heavy snow. In fact, Shōkawa-chō is called the coldest inhabited place on Honshū. The southern Mino region is much warmer and flatter. It is made of plains created by the Kiso, Nagara, and Ibi rivers.

These rivers flow through the land and eventually empty into Ise Bay. The weather can change quickly depending on where you stand. The city of Tajimi is known for being very hot in summer. It once set a record for the hottest day in Japan.

History has played a huge role in this central land. Because Gifu is in the middle of Honshu, it was a crossroads. Important paths like the Nakasendō connected the east and west of Japan. Many famous leaders lived here during the Sengoku period. Two influential figures were Oda Nobunaga and Saitō Dōsan. Nobunaga even gave the city of Gifu its name in 1567. He chose special characters to show he wanted to unify Japan.

The area has seen many decisive battles over the centuries. One famous site is where the Battle of Sekigahara took place. Even older history reaches back to the fourth century. The Jinshin War in 672 was another major event here. This war helped establish Emperor Tenmu as the 40th emperor.

Gifu is famous for many beautiful and useful things. It has a 1,300-year tradition of cormorant fishing on the Nagara River.

People also make high-quality Mino washi paper there. This paper is thinner and stronger than most other types. This craft leads to making Gifu lanterns and Gifu umbrellas. The city of Seki is well known for making fine cutlery.

Modern industry is also very important to the prefecture. Kakamigahara is a center for aerospace engineering and making plane parts. Other cities work on fashion and information technology. Even small parts like precision machines are made here. This mix of old and new keeps the economy strong.

Visitors can find many amazing things to see in Gifu. The historic villages of Shirakawa are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Science is also a big part of the region. Deep underground in the Kamioka area, there is a special laboratory. The Super-Kamiokande experiment uses a huge tank of pure water. It searches for tiny particles called neutrinos from the sun and space. This makes Gifu a place for both history and science.
