It sits on the large island of Honshu. Unlike many other places, Tochigi is landlocked. This means it does not touch the ocean at all. It is one of only eight landlocked prefectures in the whole country. Tochigi shares borders with Fukushima to the north and Gunma to the west. To the south lies Saitama, and Ibaraki is to the southeast.

The land is a mix of wide plains and high mountains.

The weather in Tochigi changes quite a bit throughout the year. It is known as a humid temperate zone. This means the temperature can change a lot between seasons. In the winter, the air is very dry with windy weather. During the summer, it becomes humid and brings frequent thunderstorms. In the center of the prefecture, there is a very large open plain. The northern part of the land is much more mountainous. Three famous mountains called Shirane, Nantai, and Nasudake rise up there.

Tochigi has a very long and interesting history. A long time ago, the area was called Shimotsuke Province. In the early 15th century, a famous school called Ashikaga Gakkō was started here. By the 16th century, it had over 3,000 students. Later, in the early 17th century, Japan was unified by Tokugawa Ieyasu. After he died, people built the Nikko Tōshō-gū shrine in 1617. They built it on ground they thought was holy.
