It sits at the southern end of Tokyo Bay. This channel connects the bay to the Sagami Gulf. Many ships use this path to travel. They head toward the Pacific Ocean and beyond. These ships often go to Tokyo, Yokohama, or Chiba.

This channel is shaped by two large pieces of land. The Boso Peninsula is on the east side. The Miura Peninsula is on the west side. The channel is quite narrow in some places. It is only 6 km wide between Cape Kannon and Futtsu Point.

Some people view Tokyo Bay in a narrow way. They say it is the area north of a straight line between the two peninsulas. This smaller area covers about 922 km². A broader view includes the Uraga Channel too. This larger area is 1320 km².

History shows that this place was very important for defense. During the late Edo period, the area was called Edo Bay. People used twelve artillery batteries to protect the entrance. These batteries sat on both the Boso and Miura peninsulas. They were meant to defend against foreign ships. The city of Uraga sits at the northern end of the channel. Because of its location, it was often the first contact point for visitors to Japan.

Many famous ships have visited this channel. In 1846, Captain James Biddle brought two U.S. Navy warships here. These were the USS Columbus and the USS Vincennes.

This was an attempt to open trade between the United States and Japan. Later, in 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry arrived near Kurihama. His group of ships was known as the Black Ships. In 1854, his ships anchored closer to Kanagawa instead. That area is where the city of Yokohama stands today.

Today, the channel remains a vital part of the region. It acts as a gateway for the large cities nearby. You can see how the land and water fit together on a map. The Tsurugisaki Lighthouse and Sunosaki Lighthouse mark its southwestern edges. These landmarks help define the boundaries of the bay. The channel connects the local waters to the vast Pacific Ocean. It remains a key path for maritime travel in Japan.
