Sagami Bay is a large part of the ocean in Japan. It sits on the island of Honshu in central Japan. The bay is tucked between two pieces of land. The Miura Peninsula is to the east. The Izu Peninsula is to the west. The island of Izu Ōshima marks the southern edge. The Shōnan coastline sits to the north. It is located southwest of the capital city, Tokyo.

Many different cities sit along the edge of the bay. These cities include Odawara, Chigasaki, and Fujisawa. You can also find Hiratsuka, Itō, and Kamakura here. Three rivers flow into the water. These are the Hikiji, Sagami, and Sakai rivers. The bay is quite deep in some spots. The maximum depth is about 1500 meters. This deep water is a place for many discoveries.

The water in the bay stays quite mild. This happens because of the warm Kuroshio Current. This current brings warm water into the area. It also lets animals from warmer places live here. Other cold water comes from the Oyashio Current. This mix of water creates a very high biodiversity. That means many different types of living things live there.

History shows that big natural events have happened here. In 1498, a massive tsunami hit the coast. It destroyed the Kōtoku-in temple and its Great Buddha. In 1923, a large earthquake occurred. The center was deep under Izu Ōshima Island. This event caused damage to Tokyo and Yokohama. It also affected Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka. The shallow seabed in the north can make waves stronger.

Scientists study this bay very often today. They want to learn how the ocean works. The University of Tokyo and JAMSTEC use the bay for research. They study the many living things in the water. In 2004, researchers found something unexpected in the soil. They found radioactive contamination from tests at Bikini Atoll. These tests took place between 1946 and 1958. Studying the bay helps us understand our world.
