The Uraga Channel is a vital maritime waterway located in Japan.

It serves as a crucial link between Tokyo Bay and the Sagami Gulf. This channel allows ships to reach major Japanese cities. These include Tokyo, Yokohama, and Chiba. From the channel, vessels can travel out to the Pacific Ocean and beyond. Its position makes it a primary gateway for maritime traffic in the region.

The geography of the channel is defined by two large landmasses. The Bōsō Peninsula sits to the east in Chiba Prefecture. The Miura Peninsula sits to the west in Kanagawa Prefecture.

The channel is quite narrow at its tightest point. This narrow passage occurs between Cape Kannon and Futtsu Point. At this location, the width is only 6 km. The channel's location helps shape how people define the size of Tokyo Bay.

There are two ways to measure the area of Tokyo Bay. One way is to look at it in a narrow sense. This definition uses a straight line between the two peninsulas. This smaller area covers about 922 km². A broader definition includes the Uraga Channel itself. This larger area is bounded by the Tsurugisaki Lighthouse and the Sunosaki Lighthouse.

This broader version of the bay covers 1320 km² in total.

Historically, the area was known as Edo Bay before 1868. Because it sits at the entrance, it held great strategic value. During the late Edo period, Japan used the channel for defense. They built twelve artillery batteries to protect the entrance. These batteries were placed on both the Bōsō and Miura peninsulas. They were designed to defend the bay against foreign ships. The city of Uraga sits at the northern end of the channel on the Miura Peninsula.

The channel has a long history of contact with the West. In 1846, Captain James Biddle of the U.S. Navy arrived here. He anchored two warships in the Uraga Channel. These ships were the USS Columbus and the USS Vincennes.

This was part of an effort to open Japan to trade with the United States. Although this specific effort was unsuccessful, it marked an important moment in history.

Another famous event occurred in July 1853. Commodore Matthew Perry brought a squadron of ships to the area. The Japanese called these vessels the "Black Ships." Perry lowered his anchors near Kurihama. This location is in present-day Yokosuka within Kanagawa Prefecture. It is situated near the mouth of the Uraga Channel. This arrival was a major step in the changing relationship between Japan and the West.

Events in the channel continued to change the region in the following years. When Perry's squadron returned in 1854, they changed their route. The ships bypassed the Uraga Channel during this visit. Instead, they anchored closer to Edo at a place called Kanagawa. This specific location is where the city of Yokohama stands today. These historical movements show how the channel influenced where major cities would eventually grow.

Today, the Uraga Channel remains essential for the movement of goods and people. It connects the busy urban centers to the global ocean. The channel's narrowness and location require careful navigation. The landmarks of the lighthouses still help define the boundaries of the bay. The waterway continues to be a fundamental part of Japan's maritime landscape.
