It sits in the Kantō region on Honshu island. Chiba borders Tokyo to the west. It also sits near Saitama and Ibaraki. Most of the land is on the Bōsō Peninsula.

This peninsula wraps around the eastern side of Tokyo Bay. Chiba is part of the Greater Tokyo Area. This is the most crowded metropolitan area in the world.

The land in Chiba has many different looks. Much of it is hilly. The east coast has the Kujūkuri Plain. This is a very good area for farming rice. A warm ocean current flows near the coast.

This current keeps winters warm. It also keeps summers cooler than in nearby Tokyo. Many parts of the coast are protected. There are two quasi-national parks and one prefectural natural park. These parks help keep the environment safe.

People have lived in Chiba for a very long time. In prehistoric times, people lived in every part of the region. They left behind large shell mounds from the Pacific Ocean.

These mounds show they used many sea products. Later, different provinces like Shimōsa and Kazusa existed here. The Chiba clan held strong power in the area. They lived in what is now Chiba City. The name "Chiba" uses two Japanese characters. One means "thousand" and the other means "leaf."

Chiba has changed a lot through history. In 1873, the prefecture was officially created. In 1923, a huge earthquake hit the region. This caused much damage in the Boso Peninsula. Later, during the 1930s, the north became a center for making military goods. After the war, the Keiyō Industrial Zone grew.

Today, Chiba is a very busy and important place. It is home to Narita International Airport. Most international travelers enter Japan through this airport. Chiba also has the Tokyo Disney Resort. Many people live in cities like Funabashi and Ichikawa. These cities are close to Tokyo. Many people live here but work in the big city.
