It sits in the Kansai region on the large island of Honshu. The land is located on the western coast of the Kii Peninsula. It opens up to the water of Osaka Bay. Several other prefectures sit nearby. Hyogo and Kyoto are to the north. Nara is to the east and Wakayama is to the south.

This area is part of a huge urban region called Keihanshin. It is one of the most productive places in the whole world.

Life in Osaka is very crowded and active. It is the second-most densely populated prefecture in Japan. Only Tokyo has more people living in a small space. The prefecture has about 8,778,035 people living there.

Osaka is the capital and the largest city. Other big cities in the area include Sakai, Higashiōsaka, and Hirakata. The land is made of many different parts. There are 33 cities, nine towns, and one village. About 11% of the land is kept as natural parks. These include places like the Meiji no Mori Minō Quasi-National Park.

The history of this land goes back a long time. Before the modern era, the area was split into three provinces. These were called Kawachi, Izumi, and Settsu. Osaka Prefecture was officially created on June 21, 1868. This happened at the very start of the Meiji era. It was made even earlier than many other prefectures in Japan. Over the years, the number of towns and cities changed. In 1889, there were many small villages. By 2005, the number of municipalities became 43.

Osaka is a very important place for business and making things. Many famous companies like Panasonic and Sharp are well known. However, most businesses are actually small or medium-sized. In 2006, there were 330,737 of these smaller businesses. They make many things like food, houses, and chemicals.

Some of these companies even work on space technology. A group called Astro-Technology SOHLA works on an artificial satellite project. This project uses help from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The area is also a major center for the stock exchange.

There are many interesting things to see and learn about here. You can see large ancient tombs like the Daisenryo Kofun.

The rivers Yodo and Yamato flow through the land. Even the shape of the land has changed over time. A large artificial island was built for the Kansai International Airport. This island made the prefecture slightly larger than Kagawa Prefecture. People in Osaka have also seen big changes in their leaders. In 2000, Fusae Ota became the first female governor in Japan. In 2008, Tōru Hashimoto became the youngest governor in the country.
