The land here has many different shapes. A large piece of land called the Shimane peninsula reaches into the sea. This peninsula helps create two brackish lakes. These are Lake Shinji and Nakaumi. A small island named Daikon sits inside Nakaumi lake. Because the land is so mountainous, farming is a special task. Most rice farming happens on the flat Izumo plain.

The weather is often wet and humid. It rains almost every day during the rainy season. This season lasts from June until the middle of July. In the winter, the sky is often cloudy. You might even see a little bit of snow.

History in Shimane goes back to very old stories. Japanese mythology says the god Ōkuninushi lived in Izumo. People still honor this god at the Izumo-taisha shrine. Long ago, the area was split into three parts. These were Iwami, Izumo, and Oki. During the Kamakura period, some emperors were sent to live on Oki Island. Later, many different clans fought for control of the land. One group, the Amago clan, held power at Gassantoda Castle. Another group, the Masuda clan, ruled the Iwami area. In 1566, Mōri Motonari took control of all three regions.

Many famous things happened in Shimane during the middle ages. The Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine was a very important place. It was one of the largest silver mines in Japan. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, control of the land changed again. Horio Yoshiharu moved to build Matsue Castle.

This castle was finished after he passed away. In 1871, the old system of ruling lands changed. This led to the Shimane we know today. Some borders changed again in 1876 and 1881.

Today, Shimane has eight main cities. Matsue is the capital and the largest city. It is part of a big metropolitan area near the sea.
