Fukui has a very long and busy history. Long ago, the area was made of two provinces called Wakasa and Echizen. In 1471, a leader named Asakura Toshikage built strong walls and gates. He built these in a valley to make a safe place. This area became a center for culture and many people lived there. By the time of Asakura Takakage, over 10,000 people lived in the valley. Later, the famous leader Oda Nobunaga invaded the area in 1573.
