The geography of the city is very interesting. Much of the flat land in the center comes from land reclamation. This is when people create new land from the sea. This work began a long time ago during the Edo period. The Ashida River flows north and south through the city. This river creates a delta area where it meets the sea. The city also sits in the basin of the Oda River.
