Many people call Okayama the "Land of Sunshine." This is because the city has very few rainy days. In fact, it has the most rain-free days of any city in Japan. The weather is warm and mild throughout the year. It is even warm enough to grow olive trees. To the north, the land turns into the Kibi Plateau. This area is made of gentle hills. These hills include the Asahikawa Dam and Okayama Airport.

The city has a long and interesting history. In the late 16th century, a leader named Ukita Naoie built a stronghold by the river. Later, his successor Ukita Hideie moved the main area to a hill. He finished building Okayama Castle around the year 1597.
