It serves as the capital of Miyagi Prefecture. The city is quite large and holds over one million people. Because it sits between the Pacific Ocean and the Ōu Mountains, the land changes a lot. The eastern side is made of flat plains. The middle part of the city is hilly. The western side is filled with high mountains.

Many people call Sendai "The City of Trees." This name comes from a long tradition of planting greenery. You can see Japanese zelkova trees lining many of the main roads.

In the summer, the city hosts the Sendai Tanabata Festival. This is the largest festival of its kind in all of Japan. During the winter, the city holds the Pageant of Starlight. Thousands of lights decorate the trees throughout most of December.

The history of the city began in the year 1600. A leader named Date Masamune founded the modern city. He wanted a location that was easy to reach from Edo.

He built Sendai Castle on a high place called Aobayama. Masamune even used special characters for the city's name. He hoped the castle would prosper like a mountain of immortals. The grid pattern of the roads today is still based on his old plans.

Sendai has seen many big changes over the years. In 1887, the first railway connected Sendai to Tokyo. This made travel much faster for everyone. In 1907, the city became home to Tohoku University. This was the first university in the region.

The city also had the first underground railway segment in Japan in 1925. Today, the city is divided into five different wards. These wards help manage the large population of people living there.

Nature has also shaped life in Sendai. The Natori River flows through the area and into Sendai Bay.

Long ago, the river was used as a natural moat for the castle. The weather in Sendai is humid and subtropical. Summers are warm and wet, while winters are cool and dry. However, the city has faced hard times from nature. In 2011, a huge magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami hit the coast. This caused very serious damage to the city and its people.
