It sits on the western side of the Deccan Plateau. The city is located near where the Krishna River and the Venna River meet. Seven mountains surround the city, and it sits on the slope of the Ajinkyatara fort. The name Satara actually comes from the word for seven forts. These are known as Sat-Tara. Nearby cities include Pune, Sangli, Kolhapur, and Solapur. The city is also home to the Kaas Plateau, which is a famous valley of flowers.

Nature works in amazing ways in this region. The Kaas Plateau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the monsoon season, the weather changes quite a bit. The city gets between 900 mm and 1,500 mm of rain. This rain helps the plants grow in the vast grasslands. In September, the plateau turns into a colorful wonderland. You can see pink balsams and yellow Smithia flowers everywhere. There are also blue utricularias that carpet the ground. This makes the area a great place for photographers to visit.

Shahu I was a very important ruler who reigned for 42 years. He helped the city become very wealthy and powerful. He even built new parts of the city called pethas.
