This city serves as the headquarters for the Ahmednagar district. It is a smaller town compared to nearby cities like Mumbai or Pune. The local people mostly speak Marathi in their daily lives. Because it sits in a rain shadow, the weather is often very hot and dry. The city sometimes faces droughts because it does not get much rain.

Building the city was a very big job a long time ago. Ahmad Nizam Shah I founded the town in 1494. He built it on the site of an older place called Bhingar. Historical records say the city was planned very carefully. Architects and builders followed the king's orders to make squares and shops. They even laid out beautiful gardens around the palaces. Some writers say the new city was as grand as Baghdad or Cairo.
