It sat in the northwestern Deccan between Gujarat and Bijapur. A family called the Nizam Shahi dynasty ruled this land. Malik Ahmad Nizam Shah I started the kingdom in 1490. He was the son of Malik Hasan Bahri. He once served as a governor before becoming a ruler. This kingdom was very important to the history of India.

Making a kingdom involves many big steps. Malik Ahmad first ruled from a town called Junnar. This town had a fort that was later named Shivneri. In 1494, the leaders began building a new capital city. They named this new capital Ahmadnagar.

The city was modeled after grand cities in Persia. It was very impressive to everyone who saw it. The leaders also built many strong forts to protect their land.

History shows that many different people led the sultanate. After Malik Ahmad died in 1510, his seven-year-old son took over. This boy was named Burhan Nizam Shah I. Later, Hussain Nizam Shah I became a very important leader. In 1565, he helped lead an alliance of four sultans. They fought a major battle at a place called Talikota.

There were many famous people and dates in this story. Murtaza Nizam Shah I made the kingdom its largest size. In 1586, the kingdom even stopped a Mughal invasion. Later, a woman named Chand Bibi served as a regent. She was a brave leader who defended the land.

One famous tomb is known as Chandbiwi's Mahal. The Mughal Empire eventually took control in 1636. Even so, the art and buildings still remind us of their time.
