The Deccan wars were a long series of battles in India. These fights happened between the Mughal Empire and the Maratha Empire. The conflict began after the Maratha leader Shivaji died in 1680. His son, Sambhaji, took over the leadership of the Marathas. At the same time, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb wanted to control the Deccan lands. This led to a very long and difficult struggle for power.

The wars involved many different ways of fighting. The Mughals had a huge army of about 500,000 men. They tried to use a pincer strategy to trap the Marathas. This meant two groups of soldiers would attack from different sides at once. One group, led by Shah Alam, moved through the south. Another group, led by Azam Shah, moved through the north. The Marathas fought back by attacking the food and supplies of the Mughal troops.

Sambhaji led the Marathas for the first nine years of the war. He was known for being very brave and skilled in battle. In 1681, he gave shelter to Muhammad Akbar, the son of Emperor Aurangzeb. This made the Emperor very angry. In 1689, the Mughals captured Sambhaji. He was executed on March 11, 1689. His death was a very important moment in history. It made the Maratha people even more determined to fight.

After Sambhaji died, Rajaram became the new Maratha leader. He moved his base to a place called Gingee in the Tamil country. This move helped the Marathas keep fighting. Maratha generals like Santaji Ghorpade and Dhanaji Jadhav used clever plans. They used fast riders to attack the Mughal armies. They also used their navy to protect the sea and stop supply paths. These tactics made it hard for the Mughals to stay in control.

The wars lasted for many years until Aurangzeb died in 1707. By that time, the Mughal armies held much of the land. However, the Marathas were still active as roving bands. In 1719, Shahu, the son of Sambhaji, gained certain rights over the Deccan provinces. He had to keep 15,000 troops for the Mughal emperor. This shows how the two sides had to find ways to live together after the fighting. The history of these wars changed the map of India forever.
