They happened between the Mughals and the Marathas. This conflict began after the death of the Maratha leader Shivaji in 1680. His son, Sambhaji, became the new leader.

The Mughal Emperor was named Aurangzeb. He had a very large army of about 500,000 men.

Aurangzeb wanted to rule the Deccan lands. He sent his armies to take many Maratha forts. One fort took seven years to fall to the Mughals.

Sambhaji fought to keep his land free. In 1689, the Mughals captured him. This was a very sad time for the Maratha people. After he died, his brother Rajaram became the leader. Rajaram moved his base to a place called Gingee.

The Maratha leaders used new ways to fight. They used fast riders to attack Mughal supply lines. They also used their navy to guard the sea. Even though the Mughals took much land, the Marathas stayed strong.
