The Mughal Empire ruled much of India. It began in 1526. A ruler named Babur started it. He came from Central Asia. Babur used new guns and cannons to win. He defeated Ibrahim Lodi at the Battle of Panipat.

Babur's grandson was Akbar. He was a very important leader. Akbar made the empire strong and stable. He let people of many faiths live together. He also made a new way to collect taxes. Farmers paid these taxes in silver coins. This helped people trade goods in big markets.

The empire grew very rich. This wealth helped the leaders pay for art. They built grand things like the Taj Mahal.

The empire reached its largest size under Aurangzeb. But the empire began to fail after he died. By 1720, the old system was broken. The British took control much later in 1857.
