In 1657, his father chose his brother, Dara Shikoh, to be the next leader. Aurangzeb did not accept this choice. He fought a war to take the throne for himself. He won a big victory at the Battle of Samugarh in May 1658. After this, people across the empire recognized him as the true ruler. He also moved his father, Shah Jahan, to the Agra Fort.

He was a very religious Muslim leader. He built many mosques and loved beautiful Arabic calligraphy. However, he also made some choices that were hard for others. He brought back a tax called the jizya for people who were not Muslim. He also ordered the removal of some non-Muslim schools and temples. Some people say he was not as tolerant as earlier leaders. Other people say he still worked with many Hindus in his government.
