The Maratha Empire was a powerful group of states in India.

It is also called the Maratha Confederacy. This name describes how different rulers worked together. They were led by a leader called a Peshwa. The Peshwa acted like a prime minister. Most of the time, the Marathas stayed loyal to the Chhatrapatis. The Chhatrapatis were the kings who followed Shivaji. This system helped them manage a huge amount of land.

This empire grew through many different steps. First, leaders fought to win back their own land. They used many strong forts to protect their people.

They also built a navy to sail the west coast. These ships helped them control the sea. Later, the Marathas used clever military plans to win battles. One famous example was the Battle of Palkhed in 1728. They also collected special taxes called chauth and sardeshmukhi. This helped them fund their large government and army.

Everything began with a man named Shivaji in the 1600s.

He was a leader from the Bhonsle clan. He wanted to create Hindavi Swarajya, which means self-rule. Shivaji won many forts, like the one at Torna. He was crowned Chhatrapati in 1674. After he died, his son Sambhaji took over.

Later, his grandson Shahu became a very important leader. Shahu helped the Maratha power grow again after many years of fighting.

Many famous names and dates belong to this time.

Peshwa Bajirao I was a great leader from 1720 to 1740. He helped the empire grow from 3% to 30% of India. Four main families helped rule the land. These were the Scindia, the Holkar, the Bhonsle, and the Gaekwad. They ruled areas like Baroda, Indore, and Nagpur. In 1761, the empire faced a hard time at the Battle of Panipat. However, they retook much of their land ten years later.

The Maratha story is linked to the history of all India. Their rise changed how the Mughal Empire worked. For a long time, the Marathas actually controlled Mughal politics. This lasted from 1737 until 1803. Eventually, the British East India Company became involved. They fought two wars called the Anglo-Maratha Wars. After the third war in 1818, the confederacy ended. This changed the way India was ruled for many years to come.
