Even as a young boy, Bajirao loved the military. He often went on trips with his father to see how armies worked. He learned to read and write, but he also spent much time outdoors.

Bajirao became the Peshwa in 1720 when he was only 20 years old.

He believed the Maratha Empire needed to grow to stay strong. He thought the Mughal Empire was getting weaker. He wanted to move into North India to expand his lands. To do this, he promoted many young men to be commanders. These men, like Malhar Rao Holkar, helped him lead his troops.

One of his biggest jobs was dealing with the Nizam of Hyderabad. The Nizam was a powerful leader who challenged Maratha rule. In 1728, Bajirao used a smart plan to surround the Nizam's army. This happened near a town called Palkhed.

This victory is famous because it showed how good his military strategy was. After the battle, the Nizam signed a treaty to recognize Maratha rights. This helped the Marathas collect taxes in the Deccan region.

Bajirao also helped a ruler named Chhatrasal in Bundelkhand. In 1729, the Mughal Empire was attacking Chhatrasal's land. Bajirao led 25,000 horsemen to come to his rescue.

Because of this help, Chhatrasal became independent again. He was very thankful to Bajirao for saving him. Chhatrasal gave Bajirao some land and his daughter, Mastani, in marriage. This marriage was part of a political agreement between the two leaders.

Bajirao changed how the city of Pune looked. In 1728, he moved his main base of operations there.
