Many people call him the "Father of Indian cinema." He was a maker of movies, a director, and a writer. His work helped start the huge film industry in India. He loved taking old legends and bringing them to life on a screen. This made movies a way for people to see their own culture. His passion for moving pictures changed Indian art forever.

Making a movie was a very hard job for Phalke. He did not just direct the actors. He also did the makeup and designed the sets. He even worked on the editing and the film processing. To practice, he once filmed a pea plant growing in a pot. He took one frame every day for over a month. This short film was called Ankurachi Wadh.

This helped him learn how to show time passing on screen.

Phalke grew up in a family of scholars in Trimbak. His father was a Sanskrit scholar and a priest. Phalke studied art and learned how to paint with oils and water. He also learned about architecture and how to make models. In 1890, he bought a camera to try photography. He even went to London in 1912 to learn more. There, he visited a film studio to see how they worked. He bought a special camera and film to bring back home.

His most famous work was a movie called Raja Harishchandra. It was released in May 1913 in Bombay. This was the first full-length Indian feature film. Because there were no women actors available, men played the female roles. Anna Salunke played the Queen, and Dattatraya Damodar Dabke played the King. Phalke made 94 feature films and 27 short films in his career. He worked hard from 1913 until 1937 to make these movies.

Today, we remember Phalke through a very special prize. The Government of India created the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. It is the highest honor a filmmaker can receive in India. It is given every year as part of the National Film Awards. This award celebrates people who have had a great lifetime of work. It keeps his name alive for every new person who makes a movie. His dream of moving pictures lives on in every cinema today.
