Rangaswamy Nataraja Mudaliar was a very important filmmaker. Many people call him the father of Tamil cinema. He was a pioneer who helped start the silent film era in South India.

He was born in 1885 in Vellore. His family was wealthy and lived in the Madras Presidency. His father was a successful trader named Rangaswamy. Mudaliar grew up with a strong interest in photography. This interest eventually grew into a love for moving pictures. He wanted to tell stories using a camera.

Before he made movies, Mudaliar was a businessman. He first started a business selling bicycles. He partnered with his cousin, S. M. Dharmalingam Mudaliar. Later, he worked with a firm called Romar Dan & Company. This company imported American cars and spare parts. Mudaliar became the first Indian to sell American cars. He sold these cars for 1,000.

He moved to Madras to run these businesses. Madras is known today as the city of Chennai.

Mudaliar learned how to make films from others. He watched the work of Dadasaheb Phalke. He also met a man named Stewart Smith. Smith was a cinematographer from Britain. Smith taught Mudaliar the basics of film photography. In 1917, Mudaliar started the Indian Film Company. He even built the first studio in South India. This studio was located on Miller's Road in Purasawalkam.

He invited his business friends to invest in his dream.

His first big movie was called Keechaka Vadham. It was a silent film made in 1917. This means the film had no recorded voices. The movie was over 6,000 feet long. It was the first silent film produced in South India.

The film was a great success for him. It was both popular with fans and successful in business. The title cards used English and Tamil. Devdas Gandhi even helped write the Hindi titles. He was the son of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mudaliar made many other historic films later on. These included Lava Kusa and Rukmini Satyabhama. He did almost every job on his sets. He worked on the scripts and the editing. He also acted as the director and producer.

Sadly, a fire accident happened at his studio in 1923. His son died in this accident. Because of this loss, Mudaliar retired from making films. He inspired other people like J. C. Daniel to start making movies. Mudaliar died on May 2, 1971.
