He was a writer, director, producer, and actor. He also worked as a film distributor and a showman. Irani was a very successful businessman too. He owned movie theaters and even a car agency. He was born into a Parsi Zoroastrian family in Pune. His work helped change how people saw stories on screen. People still look at his career as a major part of film history.

Irani changed the way movies were made in India. In 1931, he released Alam Ara. This was the first Indian "talkie," or sound film. Before this, movies were silent. To make this happen, he traveled to London, England. He spent fifteen days there to study sound recording. He also changed how movies were lit. He did not like loud noises during outdoor shoots. He began using heavy lights in a studio instead. This started a new trend of using artificial light.

His career began with a fascination for the moving image. In 1905, he represented Universal Studios in India. He ran the Alexander Cinema in Bombay for over forty years. He learned the rules of filmmaking at that theater. In 1917, he started producing his own films. His first silent film was Nala Damayanti. Later, he joined Bhogilal Dave to start Star Films. They released a film called Veer Abhimanyu in 1922. This film featured Fatima Begum in the lead role.

Irani was a very busy creator with many different companies. He founded the Majestic Film Company in 1924. He also started Royal Art Studios, which made romantic films. In 1925, he founded Imperial Films.

At Imperial Films, he made sixty-two movies. He also made the first Indian English film, Noor Jahan, in 1934. In 1937, he produced the first color film in India. This film was called Kisan Kanya. He made a total of 158 films during his career.

His influence can still be seen in movies today. He gave filmmakers a wide range of stories to tell. Many modern films use themes that he first used. He also helped many new actors find fame. People like Prithviraj Kapoor and Mehboob Khan started with his company. He even made the first Persian talkie, Dokhtar-e-Lor, in 1933. Irani died in Mumbai in 1969 at the age of eighty-two. He remains a key figure in the history of Indian movies.
