Rattana Pestonji was a very important person in the world of Thai movies. Many people call him the father of modern Thai film. He was born in Bangkok to an Indian Parsi family. As a young boy, he had a huge interest in photography. He was so good at taking cameras apart and putting them back together. Because of this skill, he went to the University of London to study engineering.

He eventually moved from engineering into the art of making movies. In 1937, he made a short film called Tang about a young girl. That film won a big award in Glasgow, Scotland. A famous filmmaker named Alfred Hitchcock even gave him the top prize. Later, he worked as a cameraman on the film Phanthaay Norasingh in 1949. He also started his own studio called Hanuman Films Company.

Rattana always wanted to try new things to make films better. Most movies in Thailand used 16 mm film at that time. Rattana chose to use 35 mm film instead. This was much harder and cost more money to use. However, it allowed him to record sound at the same time as the picture. His work on the film Santi-Vina won many awards at a festival in Tokyo in 1954.

He made many different kinds of stories for people to watch. He directed a film called Rongraem Narok, which is also called Country Hotel. He also made Sawan Mued, which was his first color film in 1958. His film Prae Dum, or Black Silk, is very famous. It is known as a film noir, which is a style of dark drama. In that film, he did almost every job himself. He was the writer, producer, director, cameraman, and editor.

Even when his movies did not make much money, he never stopped caring about film. He helped start the Thai Film Producers Association to support local artists. Sadly, he died in 1970 while giving a speech to help the film industry. Today, his name is still remembered in many ways. A top prize for short films is named the R. D. Pestonji Award. His sons also still work in the film world today.
