In 1897, King Chulalongkorn visited Switzerland. A filmmaker named François-Henri Lavancy-Clarke recorded his visit. This film was brought back to Bangkok to be shown. This event sparked great interest among the Royal Family. Local businessmen also began bringing in filmmaking equipment. They started showing foreign films to the public.

Making movies involves many different steps and tools. Early films were silent, so they needed extra help. Local cinemas used live orchestras to play music. They also had narrators to introduce the stories. Later, a special way to add sound developed. This was called dubbing. A talented person called a dubber would speak into a microphone. They translated the dialogue into Thai while the movie played. These dubbers even made sound effects for cars or animals. They became famous stars in their own right.

Thailand has experienced several important eras in film history. The first "Golden Age" lasted from about 1933 to 1942. During this time, studios made many successful films. In 1933, the Sri Krung studio made the first color Thai film. This film was called Grandpa Som's Treasure. Another era followed the Second World War. Filmmakers used 16 mm film because it was easy to find. This led to a second "golden age" of cinema. Many action films were made during this busy time.

Many famous people helped shape the Thai film industry. Prince Thongthaem Sambassatra is called the "father of Thai cinema." He made many films that were shown commercially. In the 1970s, Chalong Pakdivijit became a famous director. He was the first to find success in the international market. His 1973 action film, GOLD, made a profit abroad. Later, directors like Nonzee Nimibutr led a "new wave" of films. Action hero Tony Jaa also became famous around the world. These creators helped Thai films reach many different countries.

Thai cinema connects to many other types of art. For example, early films were often compared to nang yipun. This is a term for all moving pictures. It comes from nang, which are traditional shadow puppet plays. Movies also link to the history of the country. Some films were made to show government news or promote railroads. Others were made to tell old folk tales. Even today, films help people understand Thai life and customs. They remain a powerful way to share the nation's spirit.
