Making a movie involves many different creative steps. In the early days, silent films needed a special person. These storytellers were called benshi. They sat next to the screen to narrate the story. They were part of a long tradition of oral storytelling. Some benshi even had music to play during the show. Later, movies began to use sound in the early 1930s. This change caused the role of the benshi to slowly fade away.
