Many people call her the "First Lady of Indian cinema" because she was so important. She was one of the most skilled actresses of her time. She was also one of the highest-paid stars in the 1930s and early 1940s. Her talent earned her many high honors from the government and film groups. These included the Padma Shri and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

She truly helped shape how movies were made in India.

Devika's path to stardom involved many different types of learning. She grew up in a very wealthy and educated Bengali family. Her family was closely linked to the famous poet Rabindranath Tagore.

When she was nine, she moved to England for boarding school. In London, she studied acting and music at special academies. She also took classes in architecture and textile design. She even spent time learning about art direction and costume design. This training helped her understand every part of a film production.

Her movie career began through her relationship with a producer named Himanshu Rai. They met in London in 1928 and married the very next year.

At first, she helped him with costumes and art direction. They even traveled to Germany to study film techniques at UFA Studios. In 1933, she made her acting debut in a film called Karma. This film was special because it was a "talkie" made in both English and Hindi. It was one of the first Indian films to show a kissing scene between the leads.

In 1934, the couple returned to India to start a major film studio. They named it Bombay Talkies and worked with several partners.

This studio became one of the best-equipped places for making movies in the country. It served as a starting point for many famous actors like Ashok Kumar and Madhubala. Devika played the lead role in many successful films during this time. She often acted alongside Ashok Kumar, and people loved seeing them together on screen. The studio helped build the foundation for the modern film industry.

Life for Devika Rani was not always easy or simple. After her husband died in 1940, she took control of the studio. She worked with partners like Sashadhar Mukherjee to produce more films. Eventually, she decided to retire from the movie world in 1945. She married a Russian painter named Svetoslav Roerich and moved to a quiet estate. She lived a very private life for the next fifty years. Even though she stayed away from the cameras, her impact on cinema remained huge.
