Rangaswamy Nataraja Mudaliar was a pioneer in Indian film. People call him the father of Tamil cinema. He was born in 1885 in Vellore. Before making movies, he sold bicycle parts and cars. He was the first Indian to sell American cars.

Mudaliar loved moving pictures. He learned about film photography from a man named Stewart Smith. In 1917, he started the Indian Film Company. He built the first studio in South India. His first film was called Keechaka Vadham. It was a silent film, which means it had no sound. The film was over 6,000 feet long. It was a big success in South India.

He made more films about old stories. These included Lava Kusa and Rukmini Satyabhama. He did many jobs for his films. He worked on the scripts and the editing. He also directed the movies. Sadly, a fire accident in his studio took his son's life. Because of this, Mudaliar retired from films. He inspired many other filmmakers to start their own work. He died in 1971.
