Puttanna Kanagal was a very important filmmaker from India. He made many movies in the Kannada language. People often call him one of the most influential directors in Indian cinema. He was famous for making "bridge films." These were movies that sat right between art films and popular commercial films. His stories often focused on the lives of women. This style helped him connect with many different kinds of people.

Making a movie involves many careful steps. Puttanna was a master at using visuals to tell a story. He did not just rely on words or talking. Instead, he used colors, costumes, and beautiful places to show feelings. He was a pioneer in how songs were filmed. For example, he would spend a long time finding the perfect location. He once searched for a whole week to find a spot for a song called "Moodala Maneyaa." He also used special camera tricks like freeze shots to show deep thoughts.

His journey to becoming a director started with many hard jobs. He was born in a poor family in a village called Kanagal. Before he made movies, he worked as a teacher and a salesman. He even worked as a cleaner. Later, he worked as a publicity boy. This job brought him closer to the world of theater and film. He began his film career as an assistant and a driver for B. R. Panthulu. His very first job as an assistant director was for the film Rathnagiri Rahasya in 1957.

Throughout his life, Puttanna made 24 Kannada movies. He directed many famous films like Gejje Pooje, Sharapanjara, and Naagarahaavu. His film Belli Moda in 1967 was special because it was the first Kannada movie shot entirely outdoors. He won many big prizes for his hard work. He received three National Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards South. He also won many Karnataka State Film Awards. He passed away in 1985 while he was working on a film called Masanada Hoovu.

Many famous actors started their careers because of his teaching. One actor, Vishnuvardhan, called him a "God-sent teacher." He said acting in a movie with Puttanna was an experience of a lifetime. Even other famous directors looked up to him. A director named K. Balachander said he considered Puttanna his guru. Today, people still honor his memory in many ways. A theater in Bangalore was even named after him. Every year, the state of Karnataka gives out a special award in his name.
