S. R. Puttanna Kanagal was a highly influential Indian filmmaker. He was a central figure in Kannada cinema, the film industry of the Karnataka state. He is best known for creating "bridge films." These movies connected serious art cinema with popular commercial cinema. While many films of his time focused on mythology or history, Kanagal moved toward socially relevant themes. His stories often centered on the lives and emotions of women. This approach helped him reach both critics and ordinary moviegoers.

Kanagal used a specific visual method to tell his stories. He believed in making films that were visual rather than just oral. This means he used images to communicate more than just spoken words. He was a pioneer in song picturization, which is the way songs are filmed in a movie. He used colors, costumes, and specific locations to match the mood of a song. For example, he filmed a song for the movie Manasasarovara in a dusty mining area to show a character's sadness. He also used technical effects like freeze shots and negative images. These tools helped show a character's inner thoughts and feelings.

His filmography includes many different types of works. He directed 24 Kannada movies and several films in other languages like Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. His first directorial film was the 1964 Malayalam movie School Master. His first Kannada film as a director was Belli Moda, or Silver Cloud, in 1967. This movie was a major success and was the first Kannada film shot entirely outdoors. He also directed landmark films like Gejje Pooje, Sharapanjara, and Naagarahaavu. Each of these films is considered a milestone in the history of Kannada cinema.

Kanagal's personal journey was marked by significant struggle. He was born in 1933 into a poor Brahmin family in the village of Kanagal. Because of his poverty, he held many difficult jobs. He worked as a teacher, a salesman, and even a cleaner. He eventually became a publicity boy, which brought him into the world of theater and cinema. He began his professional film career as a driver and assistant director for B. R. Panthulu. His first role as an assistant director was for the 1957 film Rathnagiri Rahasya.

Life was not always easy for the director, even after he became famous. In the early 1980s, he faced personal and professional challenges. He experienced a separation from his wife, the actress Aarathi, in 1981. During this time, his film Ranganayaki received critical praise but did not perform well at the box office. These events impacted his health, and he had no film work for 14 months. He eventually bounced back with the film Maanasa Sarovara, which was made with the help of the actor Srinath. Kanagal passed away on June 5, 1985, in Bengaluru while filming Masanada Hoovu.

Kanagal's impact on the industry is measured by his many awards and his students. He won three National Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards South. He also received multiple Karnataka State Film Awards. Many famous actors, such as Rajinikanth and Vishnuvardhan, gained prominence through his work. Vishnuvardhan described Kanagal as a "God-sent teacher" who helped him find his acting potential. Even the famous Tamil director K. Balachander called Kanagal his guru. Balachander admired how Kanagal used visuals to express deep human emotions.

Today, the legacy of Puttanna Kanagal remains strong in Indian culture. The Poonam Theatre in Jayanagar, Bangalore, was renamed in his honor. The state of Karnataka also honors his memory through the Puttanna Kanagal Award. This award is given every year during the Karnataka State Awards function to recognize excellence in filmmaking. His work continues to be studied as a bridge between different styles of Indian cinema.
