He is recognized for his intense screen presence and his exceptional skills as a dancer. Through his performances, he has achieved the status of a "mass hero," a term used to describe stars who command immense popularity among large audiences. His excellence in the craft has been recognized with several prestigious honors. These include three Filmfare Awards South and five SIIMA Awards. Beyond the screen, he is a philanthropist who supports social causes through the Yasho Marga Foundation. This charitable organization was established by Yash and his wife, the actress Radhika Pandit.

Yash's professional journey began with a disciplined approach to the performing arts. Before becoming a film star, he worked in various television series during the 2000s. He also gained foundational experience in theatre by joining the Benaka drama troupe. This group was founded by the dramatist B. V. Karanth. Within the troupe, Yash worked as a backstage worker, earning a daily wage. He eventually transitioned into the role of a backup actor. In 2004, he achieved a significant milestone by portraying the lead role of Balarama in a theatrical play. This period of working in theatre and television helped build the skills he would later use in cinema.

The path to his stardom was not immediate and involved several distinct stages of development. He made his film debut in 2007 with a supporting role in the movie Jambada Hudugi. His true breakthrough occurred in 2008 with the romantic drama Moggina Manasu. In this film, he played a supporting character, a role that earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. Following this, he faced challenges with his first leading role in the film Rocky, which was a commercial failure. He then worked to establish himself through various genres, including romantic comedies like Modalasala and action films like Kirataka. This period allowed him to refine his ability to balance acting with his talent for dance.

Yash's personal history is rooted in the village of Boovanahalli in the Hassan district of Karnataka.

He was born on 8 January 1985. While his legal name is Naveen Kumar, his family used the name Yashwanth due to astrological traditions. He eventually chose the professional stage name "Yash" to create a unique identity in the industry. His father, Arun Kumar, worked as a driver for transport corporations, including the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. His mother, Pushpa, is a homemaker. As a young student in Mysore, Yash actively participated in school theatre and dance competitions. Although his parents initially preferred he pursue a career as a government officer, they eventually supported his move to Bangalore at age 16.

Between 2013 and 2017, Yash transitioned from a rising talent to a dominant leading actor. He sought to reinvent his image, moving away from village-centric roles toward more modern characters. The 2013 film Googly was a major turning point in this reinvention. By adopting a new hairstyle and a "young and charming look," he helped the film become one of the year's highest-grossing Kannada productions. This success helped solidify his status as a leading star. He followed this with a series of "hero-centric" films, such as Raja Huli and Gajakesari. These movies focused on his individual screen presence and helped define his persona as a major commercial force.

The most significant era of his career arrived with the KGF duology, directed by Prashanth Neel.
