Beyond her film roles, she is a global figure recognized for her influence and social activism. In 2018, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. She later received the Time100 Impact Award in 2022. Her career spans diverse genres, including romantic comedies, period dramas, and Hollywood action films. She has also established herself as a business investor and a philanthropist.

Padukone's path to stardom began with a rigorous athletic background. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1986, she was raised in Bangalore, India. Her father, Prakash Padukone, was a professional badminton player. As a teenager, Deepika competed in badminton at the national level. Her daily routine was highly disciplined, involving physical training at five in the morning.

She eventually transitioned from competitive sports to a career in fashion modeling in 2004. She studied sociology at Indira Gandhi National Open University before her modeling career required her to leave.

Her transition into acting involved several specific developmental steps. After modeling for brands like Liril, she gained recognition in a music video for Himesh Reshammiya. Director Farah Khan noticed her in this video and cast her in the 2007 film Om Shanti Om. To prepare for her dual roles, Padukone studied the body language of actresses Helen and Hema Malini. She also utilized hasta mudras, which are traditional Indian hand gestures, for a song sequence. This role earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and established her in Bollywood.

Padukone's filmography includes various distinct types of performances. She has starred in romantic comedies such as Chennai Express and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

She also took on roles in intense period dramas like Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat. In 2017, she expanded into Hollywood with the action film XXX: Return of Xander Cage. She has also played complex characters in films like Piku and the psychological thriller Karthik Calling Karthik. These varied roles allowed her to demonstrate a wide range of emotional depth.

Her career faced periods of both massive success and significant challenges. After her breakthrough, she experienced a series of films that were not commercially successful. Critics sometimes noted that her performances lacked certain qualities during this time. However, the 2012 film Cocktail served as a major turning point. In this film, she chose to play an impulsive character named Veronica to challenge herself. This decision helped her prove her capabilities as a versatile actress.

Following this, she appeared in several top-grossing action films like Pathaan in 2023.

Padukone has achieved significant recognition through numerous awards and global appearances. She has won three Filmfare Awards for her work in cinema.
