She is recognized primarily for her work in Hindi-language cinema, often referred to as Bollywood. Kaif has become one of India's highest-paid actresses through her diverse filmography. Her career includes significant accolades, such as four Screen Awards and four Zee Cine Awards. She has also earned three Filmfare Award nominations. While critics have sometimes debated her acting range, she is widely celebrated for her dancing ability and her roles in action films. Beyond the screen, she is a successful entrepreneur and a frequent brand endorser.

Kaif's professional path began through fashion modeling. After winning a beauty contest in Hawaii at age 14, she secured her first modeling assignment in a jewelry campaign. She later moved to London, where she worked with freelance agencies and appeared at London Fashion Week. Her transition to acting occurred after filmmaker Kaizad Gustad noticed her at a fashion show. This led to her debut in the 2003 film Boom. Although Boom was a commercial and critical failure, it served as her entry into the Indian film industry.

Following this, she established a successful modeling career in India, appearing in the Kingfisher Calendar and endorsing major brands like Coca-Cola and Samsung.

Success in the film industry required Kaif to overcome significant linguistic hurdles. Initially, she faced difficulty securing roles because of her limited command of Hindi and a thick British accent. This led some filmmakers to be hesitant about casting her. To address this, she took Hindi classes to improve her diction. She also expanded her experience by appearing in the Telugu-language film Malliswari in 2004. In this film, she played a princess fleeing a murderous caretaker. This role was a profitable venture and earned her a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actress in Telugu. This period marked her transition from a model to a recognized film performer.

Kaif's career entered a period of major breakthrough between 2007 and 2011. She achieved commercial success with romantic comedies such as Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? and Namastey London. In Namastey London, she played a British Indian girl, a role that utilized her real-life experience living in London.

During this era, she began frequent collaborations with actor Akshay Kumar. Her films during this time, including Partner and Welcome, were significant financial successes. While some critics noted that her roles were often repetitive or focused on her appearance, her presence on the box office remained strong. She continued to build her reputation with films like Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Raajneeti.

In the following decade, Kaif became a staple of high-budget action thrillers. She starred in massive hits such as Ek Tha Tiger in 2012, Dhoom 3 in 2013, and Bang Bang! in 2014. The latter was among the highest-grossing Indian films of that decade. Her ability to lead action-oriented stories helped solidify her status as a top star. Even after brief setbacks, she returned to the box office with hits like Tiger Zinda Hai in 2017 and Sooryavanshi in 2021.

These films demonstrated her enduring popularity in the action genre and her ability to draw large audiences.

Kaif has also demonstrated greater dramatic depth in specific performances. Her role as an alcoholic actress in the 2018 romantic drama Zero earned her the Zee Cine Award for Best Supporting Actress.

More recently, her performance in the 2024 mystery thriller Merry Christmas received positive reception. These roles show a range beyond the action and comedy genres that defined much of her early success. Her career trajectory reflects a move from a foreign newcomer to a central figure in Indian popular culture.

Outside of her acting career, Kaif has expanded into business and philanthropy. In 2019, she launched Kay Beauty, her own cosmetic line. She also remains active in charitable work, specifically through Relief Projects India. This organization, which she supports alongside her mother, helps underprivileged children.
