Farah Khan is a multifaceted creator within the Hindi film industry. She works as a director, choreographer, dancer, writer, producer, and actress. Her career is defined by her ability to blend movement and storytelling. As a choreographer, she designs the dance steps for musical numbers in films. As a director, she manages the entire creative process of making a movie. Khan has made a significant impact on cinema through her energetic and commercially successful projects.

Khan's professional journey began with a profound moment of inspiration. While studying sociology at St. Xavier's College in Bombay, she watched Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video. This single event inspired her to pursue dance as a vocation. She had no prior dance training at that time. She taught herself how to dance and eventually established her own dance group. Her breakthrough in professional choreography occurred during the production of the 1992 film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. She took over the role after the previous choreographer left the project.

Her career is divided into several distinct professional roles. In choreography, she has designed more than one hundred songs for over eighty films. This work has earned her a National Film Award for Best Choreography and seven Filmfare Awards. As a director, she transitioned from dance to leading entire film productions. Her directorial debut was the masala film Main Hoon Na in 2004. She also works in television as a judge for reality competitions like Indian Idol and Dance India Dance Li'l Masters.

Khan's family history is deeply connected to the world of entertainment. Her father, Kamran Khan, was a filmmaker who began his career as a stuntman. Her mother, Menaka Irani, is the sister of the former child actors Honey and Daisy Irani. These connections make Khan the first cousin of film personalities Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. Her brother, Sajid Khan, is also an actor and director. In 2004, she married Shirish Kunder, an editor who worked on her first film. They later founded a production company called Three's Company to honor their triplets born in 2008.

Her success in directing is marked by significant commercial milestones. Her first film, Main Hoon Na, was the second highest-grossing Indian film of 2004. It earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Director. This made her only the second female director to receive such a nomination. Her next major film, Om Shanti Om, was released in 2007. This film became the highest-grossing Indian film ever at the time of its release. It also made her the first female director to be nominated for a Filmfare Award twice.

Khan's influence extends far beyond the borders of India.

She has participated in international projects such as the film Monsoon Wedding and the Chinese film Perhaps Love. Her choreography has been recognized globally, including a Tony Award nomination for the production Bombay Dreams. She has also worked with international pop stars. In 2006, she trained Shakira for a performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. She also choreographed the singer Kylie Minogue for the 2009 film Blue.

Beyond the film studio, Khan maintains a large digital presence. In April 2024, she began posting cooking vlogs on her YouTube channel. These videos feature her cook, Dilip, and have become very popular. Her channel has grown to include three million subscribers. This demonstrates her ability to connect with audiences through many different forms of media, from large-scale cinema to personal digital content.
