Saroj Khan was a legendary dance choreographer in Indian Hindi cinema. She was the first woman to work as a choreographer in Bollywood. A choreographer is the person who designs and directs dance movements for performers. Khan was especially famous for her mastery of mujra, a specific dance form. Her career spanned more than forty years in the film industry. She choreographed over 3,000 different songs throughout her professional life.

Her professional journey followed a clear path of growth and skill. She began her career as a child artist at age three. She performed in the film Nazarana under the name baby Shyama. Later, she worked as a background dancer during the late 1950s. She learned the technical aspects of dance while working under choreographer B. Sohanlal. She eventually moved into choreography as an assistant before becoming an independent professional. Her first major break as an independent choreographer came with the film Geeta Mera Naam in 1974.

Khan's career is defined by her iconic collaborations with major film stars. She worked closely with the actress Sridevi during the 1980s. This partnership produced famous dance numbers like "Hawa Hawai" from the movie Mr. India in 1987. She also choreographed "Main Teri Dushman, Dushman Tu Mera" for the film Nagina in 1986. Later, she collaborated with Madhuri Dixit to create legendary sequences. These included "Ek Do Teen" from Tezaab in 1988 and "Dhak Dhak Karne Laga" from Beta in 1992. These dances became essential parts of the Bollywood experience.

Personal history also shaped her identity and her professional name. She was born Nirmala Nagpal to parents Kishanchand Sadhu Singh and Noni Singh. Her family migrated to India following the partition of India. After a marriage and subsequent separation, she married businessman Sardar Roshan Khan in 1975. Upon converting to Islam, she adopted her professional name, Saroj Khan. She had three children, including a daughter named Sukaina Khan. Sukaina Khan later became known for running a dance institute in Dubai.

Khan received more professional recognition than any other choreographer in the industry. She won four National Film Awards for her excellence in dance. She also won a record eight Filmfare Awards for Best Choreography. The Filmfare Awards actually instituted this specific category after seeing the audience response to her work. Her song "Ek Do Teen" from Tezaab was a major reason for this change. In 2003, she received a National Film Award for the song "Dola Re Dola" from the movie Devdas. This award was presented to her by President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

Beyond the film set, Khan was a major figure on television. She served as a jury member and judge on many reality dance shows. These included Nach Baliye, Boogie Woogie, and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. She even appeared as a judge on the show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Her life was also the subject of a 2012 documentary. The film, titled "The Saroj Khan Story," was directed by Nidhi Tuli. Her influence continued through her son, Raju Khan, who became a choreographer and producer.

Saroj Khan's legacy connects the art of traditional dance to modern mass media. She helped transform how dance is viewed in global cinema. Her work bridged the gap between classical movements and popular entertainment. She remains a central figure in the history of Indian performing arts. Her death occurred on July 3, 2020, at the age of 71. She had been admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital due to breathing difficulties. Her impact on the world of dance continues to be studied and celebrated.
