Born on June 8, 1957, in Mumbai, she grew up in a wealthy family. Her father, Chunibhai Kapadia, was a Gujarati businessman from an Ismaili Khoja family. Kapadia aspired to enter the film industry from a very young age. Her father used his social connections to help her find opportunities. This early drive eventually led to one of the most famous debuts in Indian film history.

Kapadia's career began through a series of specific events and connections. In 1971, the filmmaker Raj Kapoor was searching for a new female lead. A friend of Kapoor named Munni Dhawan suggested Kapadia for the role. At age 14, Kapadia performed a screen test on a film set. Kapoor was impressed by her spontaneity and her ability to improvise. He cast her in the title role of the teen romance film *Bobby*. The film was released in September 1973 and became a massive commercial success.

*Bobby* did more than just make Kapadia a star; it changed Indian fashion. The character wore miniskirts and polka-dot shirts that became iconic. These patterns were so popular they were often called "Bobby Print." The film was India's highest-grossing movie of 1973. It was also the second highest-earning film of that entire decade. For her performance, Kapadia won her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress. This role established her as a major cultural figure in the country.

Her personal life and career underwent a major shift in 1973. Shortly before *Bobby* was released, she married the actor Rajesh Khanna. At age 15, she entered a marriage with Khanna, who was 30 at the time. Following his wishes, Kapadia quit acting to focus on her new life. The couple had two daughters, Twinkle and Rinke Khanna. However, the marriage faced many difficulties, including inequality and infidelity. Kapadia and Khanna separated in April 1982, though they never officially divorced.

Kapadia made a significant comeback to the film industry in 1984. She felt a personal need to prove her professional capabilities. Her return was marked by the film *Saagar*, released in 1985. In this film, she played Mona D'Silva, a young Catholic woman. *Saagar* was chosen as India's official entry for the 58th Academy Awards. The film's success earned her a second Filmfare Award for Best Actress. This period solidified her status as a leading actress in Hindi cinema.

Throughout her career, Kapadia sought to expand her artistic range. She moved beyond roles that relied solely on her beauty. She became one of the first actresses to lead women-centered Hindi action films. She also found great success in parallel cinema, which focuses on realistic drama. A major highlight was her 1993 role in *Rudaali*. She played a professional mourner and won the National Film Award for Best Actress.

She also won a Filmfare Critics Award for this performance.

In later decades, Kapadia became more selective with her film roles. She often portrayed complicated, middle-aged women in modern productions. She appeared in the film *Dil Chahta Hai* in 2001 and the American production *Leela* in 2002. Her recent work includes the Hollywood thriller *Tenet* and the action film *Pathaan*.
