Khanna's path to stardom began with a major competition in 1965. He participated in the All India Talent Contest organized by United Producers and Filmfare. Out of more than 10,000 contestants, he was one of eight finalists. He actually won the contest by a single point. This victory provided him with a contract for his first films. He made his professional debut in the 1966 film Aakhri Khat. This movie was historically significant as India's first official entry for the Academy Awards in 1967. He followed this with films like Raaz and Aurat to build his early career.

The year 1969 served as the primary turning point for his career. The release of the romantic musical Aradhana made him an overnight sensation. The film was a massive blockbuster and featured a famous soundtrack by S. D. Burman. This music helped make Kishore Kumar a leading playback singer in the industry. Shortly after, the film Do Raaste became another huge success. It featured popular songs like "Bindiya Chamkegi" and became a hit pair for Khanna and actress Mumtaz. Notably, Do Raaste was the first Indian film to gross £100,000 in the United Kingdom. This success established a pattern of high-earning romantic and family dramas.

Khanna achieved a level of dominance that remains unmatched in cinema history. Between 1970 and 1971, he maintained an incredible run of consecutive hits. He achieved 17 consecutive successful films within a three-year period. This record has not been broken to this day. During this era, he starred in diverse films such as Anand, which many critics consider his best work. He also appeared in films like Haathi Mere Saathi and Kati Patang. His ability to connect with audiences across different genres solidified his status as a superstar. He became a symbol of romantic charm and emotional depth on screen.

Throughout his career, Khanna received several prestigious honors for his acting talent. He won five Filmfare Awards, which are major honors in the Indian film industry. He earned a Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his double role in Sachaa Jhutha. He also received the award for his performance in Anand, where he played a cancer patient. In 2005, he was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. Beyond cinema, he received the Padma Bhushan, which is India's third highest civilian honor. This award was given to him posthumously in 2013 to recognize his contributions to society.

In addition to his artistic achievements, Khanna entered the world of politics. He served as a Member of Parliament in the 10th Lok Sabha. He represented the New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency between 1992 and 1996. He was elected through a by-election in 1992 as a candidate for the Indian National Congress. This transition showed his ability to influence life outside the film studio. His family also remained connected to the arts. He married Dimple Kapadia in 1973, and their daughters, Twinkle and Rinke, both worked as actresses. His life moved through many different spheres of public interest.

Khanna's career faced challenges as the film industry began to change in the mid-1970s. A shift occurred from romantic social dramas to action-oriented films. This period saw the rise of new stars like Amitabh Bachchan. During the years 1976 to 1978, some of Khanna's films faced commercial setbacks. Despite these changes, his earlier works like Bawarchi remained cult classics. He continued to work and release films like Aap Ki Kasam and Prem Nagar. He passed away on 18 July 2012 after a period of illness.
