Sanjeev Kumar was a legendary Indian actor recognized for his immense versatility. He worked primarily in Hindi and Gujarati cinema. Kumar was famous for his ability to master many different genres. He moved easily between romantic dramas, intense thrillers, and lighthearted comedies. This range allowed him to connect with a massive audience. He was even voted the seventh greatest actor in Indian cinema history in a Rediff.com poll. His talent made him a standout figure in the golden eras of Bollywood.

Kumar's acting process was defined by a willingness to take on unconventional roles. He often chose characters that were non-glamorous or physically demanding. For example, he played a deaf and mute person in the film Koshish. In the movie Naya Din Nai Raat, he performed nine different roles. He also portrayed a chess-obsessed man in Satyajit Ray's classic Shatranj Ke Khilari. This dedication to authenticity meant he did not rely on designer clothes to attract viewers. Instead, he used his skill to bring depth to every character.

His career was marked by several distinct stages of professional growth. He began as a stage actor with the IPTA in Bombay. He later joined the Indian National Theatre to hone his craft. Even as a young man, he showed a penchant for playing older roles. At age 22, he played an old man in an adaptation of All My Sons. The following year, he played a 60-year-old with six children in the play Damru. He eventually transitioned to film, making a small debut in Hum Hindustani in 1960. His first role as a protagonist arrived with the film Nishan in 1965.

Kumar's success was deeply tied to his work with famous directors and his ability to adapt regional stories. The director Gulzar was a significant collaborator who cast him in many roles. Gulzar cast him as an older man in films like Parichay and Aandhi. Later, Gulzar cast him as a younger man in Angoor and Namkeen. Kumar also worked extensively with director Hrishikesh Mukherjee. This partnership led to the film Arjun Pandit, which earned him a Filmfare Best Actor Award. Many of his Hindi hits were actually remakes of popular South Indian films. He successfully reprised roles from Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada movies in Hindi versions.

His filmography includes some of the most significant numbers and achievements in Indian cinema. He won two National Film Awards for Best Actor for Dastak and Koshish. He also received numerous Filmfare Awards for films like Sholay and Mausam. His performance in Angoor was listed by Forbes India as one of 25 iconic performances. He starred in massive blockbusters such as Sholay and Trishul. These films helped him stand his ground against other superstars like Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar. His ability to succeed in both supporting and lead roles was truly unique.
