Kishore Kumar was a legendary Indian playback singer, musician, and actor. A playback singer is a performer who records songs that are later played during a film. Kumar is considered one of the most influential and dynamic singers in Indian music history. He was famous for his unique ability to sing in many different voices. He also used a singing style called yodelling, which involves rapid changes in pitch.

This technique became an essential part of his musical identity.

Kumar's singing process involved immense vocal skill and versatility. He could master various genres and even perform complex musical tasks alone. For example, in the film Half Ticket, music director Salil Chowdhury wanted a duet with Lata Mangeshkar. Because she was unavailable, Kumar sang both the male and female parts himself. He performed these parts admirably, showing his ability to manipulate his voice. His brother, Ashok Kumar, noted that his voice was effective because it hit the microphone at its most sensitive point.

His musical style evolved through various stages and influences. Early in his career, he imitated the style of singer K. L. Saigal. However, music director S. D. Burman encouraged him to develop a unique sound. This guidance helped Kumar transition from a singer who copied others to a master of his own style. He drew inspiration from international artists like Jimmie Rodgers and Tex Morton to perfect his yodelling. He also held great respect for the poet Rabindranath Tagore and the actor Danny Kaye.

Kumar was born Abhas Kumar Ganguly on August 4, 1929, in Khandwa. He was the youngest of four siblings in a Bengali Brahmin family. His father, Kunjalal Ganguly, was a lawyer, and his mother was Gouri Devi. His eldest brother, Ashok Kumar, was already a star in Hindi cinema. This connection led the family to Bombay, where Abhas adopted the name Kishore Kumar. He began his professional journey as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies.

Throughout his career, Kumar achieved massive success and record-breaking numbers. He won eight Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer. He holds the record for the most nominations and wins in that specific category. His popularity was so vast that he sang 245 songs for the actor Rajesh Khanna. These songs were featured across 92 different films, setting an unbeaten record. In 2013, a Filmfare magazine poll voted him the most popular male playback singer.

Beyond singing, Kumar had a complex and productive acting career. He appeared in 22 films between 1946 and 1955. While many early films were not successful, he found major hits between 1954 and 1966. Notable films included Naukari and the comedy Padosan. He also worked as a producer and director for his own projects. One such film, Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein, explored the relationship between a father and his deaf and mute son.

Kumar's legacy connects to the broader history of Indian cinema and global music. He sang in many languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, and Urdu. His work bridged the gap between traditional Indian styles and western-influenced techniques like yodelling. Even after his death in 1987, his influence remains strong. In 2012, his last unreleased song sold for 15.6 lakh dollars at an auction. His life continues to be honored through awards and commemorative stamps in India.
